Keira Knightley proved to be fashion royalty at the Academy Awards. She wore a wine-coloured, one-shoulder gown by Vera Wang that hit the right balance between youthful funkiness and movie-star glamour.

The 20-year-old wore her strawberry blond hair in a loose ponytail, and she had on a one-of-a-kind necklace with emeralds, rubies and diamonds from the 1960s she chose from the Bulgari archives.

The Mail on Sunday has learned that the 20-year-old actress is set to become the new 'face' of CHANEL cosmetics:

A source said: "Keira loves Chanel and she is perfect for them. Not only is she gorgeous but, unlike Kate, she has never been touched by scandal. Chanel is expected to announce the deal any day."

Knightley, who already has a £1million contract to promote Royal jewellers Asprey, is tipped to wear a Chanel couture dress on the red carpet tonight.

The source added: "Keira is one of the most beautiful women in the world and becoming the face of Chanel is a dream come true. She will promote their cosmetics and make-up line worldwide.

"It's a huge deal. They are just dotting the i's and crossing the t's but the contract is done."

Knightley, up for an award for her role as Elizabeth Bennet in Pride & Prejudice, has just finished filming two sequels to her hit film Pirates Of The Caribbean with Johnny Depp and is now working on 19th Century love story Silk with Alfred Molina.

Her next project is a big-screen version of Ian McEwan's best-selling novel Atonement, which will begin shooting in June.


She said recently: "I know that my face has got me jobs and that's just the way it is. But what happens is that you sit for two-and-ahalf hours in front of the mirror covering up your imperfections.

If this year's Oscar voters really want to make a bold statement, their course Sunday night is almost too easy.
They should hand the Best Actress prize to Keira Knightley for her performance as Elizabeth Bennet in "Pride & Prejudice."

For one thing, she deserves it. As a purely artistic decision, this might be the easiest Oscar call since picking Johnny Depp as Best Actor two years ago for "Pirates of the Caribbean."

Except, of course, he lost.

And Knightley will probably lose this year, too.

Such is Hollywood.

Her competition, for the record, is perfectly deserving: Judi Dench in "Mrs. Henderson Presents," Reese Witherspoon in "Walk the Line," Charlize Theron in "North Country" and Felicity Huffman in "Transamerica."

Knightley is simply better.

She embodies in every sense the elegant young colt Jane Austen crafted 193 years ago at a tiny writing desk by the sunny front window of her cozy home in the genteel British countryside.

Knightley may be even better than Jennifer Ehle, who created a near-definitive Lizzie in the splendid six-hour 1995 BBC "Pride and Prejudice" miniseries.

For one thing, Knightley plays Lizzie at the age Austen intended, about 20. Most screen Lizzies are older, perhaps because directors feel she's too mature for that age. But Knightley is 20, looks it and hits no false notes.

As with most Austen stories, nothing much seems to happen in "Pride and Prejudice" until the end, when we realize everything has happened: Lizzie and her sweet older sister Jane have found the love that charts the rest of their lives.

Since that's precisely what most people walk around seeking, you'd think it's ground Hollywood would regularly plow - and, once upon a time, it did. But today Hollywood puts less faith in plain old love than in $100 million worth of special effects.

That's why, in a year abuzz with talk of breakthrough awards, a Knightley win might be the most radical statement of all.

So let's not expect it. The best news this week for "P&P" fans will likely be the fact that it was released yesterday on DVD.

Still, since it is the week when Hollywood honors its acting, we should admire how well the modest 19th-century Elizabeth Bennet is conveyed by an actress who, in her own real life, visits trendy clubs in raccoon makeup and poses for the cover of Vanity Fair wearing only a navel ring.

What we're seeing now is the fruits of hard work, since Knightley moved up to Lizzie through lesser roles in films like "The Phantom Menace," "Bend It Like Beckham," "Love Actually" and "Pirates of the Caribbean."

She returns in "Pirates" II and III as Capt. Jack Sparrow's girlfriend, Elizabeth Swann. That's also a good love story.

All it needs is an Oscar or two

Unless anyone knows any different Elizabeth isn't Jack's girlfriend

Some of the reviews are in on Domino and Elizabethtown, movies starring Keira and Orlando, and the reviews are not all good. Johnny Depp dismisses any concerns, says, "I had that for seven years, didn't bother me ... I think like seven people went to see Cry Baby."
